We all know someone with faults, or "bad" behaviors do we not? What if that someone is you?
Studies show that the energy it takes to cover up our bad behavior is exhausting in the long run and bad for our physical health. So why not change it and be done with it?
Anyone who has ever tried to change a bad behavior knows it is easier to say than do. In fact, sometimes we do not even know exactly what our bad behavior is; we just know we feel bad at times.
Ah...feelings, they sure are good at pointing out our flaws aren't they. So let's start with them.
What a "bad" behavior feels like
A "rolling" feeling in your stomach
A sense of dread
A sense of shame
A sense of remorse
Scary to think about
While these are really just a sampling, they help you to realize that the things you feel bad about may actually be behaviors. The good news is that if you will identify them, you can change them!
Changing your behavior
Practice patience. If you know you act out a bad behavior if you have to wait, plan to bring something with you so that if you do have to wait you will be occupied and thus not engage in your bad behavior.
Be prepared. Using the same example; since you know you engage in a bad behavior that you want to change when you have to wait, make sure you always have something with you by preparing a tote of books or whatever you like and keeping it with you in these situations.
Review. This is very simple but you have to do it. Every morning when you wake up tell yourself what behavior you want to change, why, how you will handle it and with what. Repeat this again at night before bed.
The point is that you are no longer doing the same thing and expecting a different result. You have chosen to change a behavior that causes you to feel bad and replace it with a choice that feels good.
You are a master of self esteem! There is nothing you can not change now so go ahead and get started.
It will be easy for you to make a list of every bad behavior you want to change. You will have a strategy for change and the choice is all your own.
Enjoy the new you and the good feelings that go with it. You have control of your behavior not the other way around.
